He continued in great scoring form in his first season, ending the campaign as Scotland’s top scorer with 36 goals. Over the next five years he was a regular in the front line whilst he graduated as a coach and when he was released in May 1974, he joined Montrose as player/coach, later becoming their manager.
After he left Montrose, he used his football knowledge as a scout and helped United find many of the young players who would emerge over the years. He was also a coach at Tannadice for fifteen years.
JOHN HOLT
Total Apps: 405 Goals: 24
John first signed for United on an S form in 1973, when he was with Invergowrie Boys Club. An early introduction to the senior side propelled him into the Scotland professional youth squad. In his first few seasons at Tannadice, John had some tough competition but gradually became established in the side from 1977 onwards. He collected League Cup winners’ medals in 1979 and 1980 and was also part of the League Championship squad. He has runners-up medals from three Scottish Cup finals, two League Cup finals and the UEFA Cup final.
John was a regular in the side for the best part of ten years but left United to join Dunfermline Athletic for £50,000 early in 1987-88. He later returned to United as SFA Community Development Officer and became part of the management team during Paul Hegarty’s brief period in charge of United in 2003. In 2012 he was back at Tannadice coaching United Academy youths.
DUNCAN HUTCHISON
Total Apps: 215 Goals: 122
Duncan joined United in July 1927, after being released by Dunfermline Athletic. Quickly earning the nickname “Hurricane Hutch”, he was a regular in the side for two full seasons, completing both as top scorer. As United began season 1929-30 in Division One, the player was in top form but when an offer of around £4,000 was received from Newcastle United, he decided it was time to try his luck at a higher level and moved south.
He was then with Derby County and Hull City and in June 1935 he returned to Tanadice in a swap deal involving Bobby Yorke. In his second spell he took on the role of a supporting forward but he had lost little of his attacking prowess and found the net often as a regular in the side over the next four seasons.
He was invited to join the Board at Dundee United in 1953 and took temporary charge of team matters between the resignation of Willie MacFadyen and the appointment of Reggie Smith as Manager. In 1963 Duncan became Chairman of Dundee United. He was in that position for just a brief spell but remained a Director until his death in 1973.
FRANK KOPEL

Frank began his senior career at Manchester United, making 12 appearances before moving to Blackburn Rovers, who released him in December 1971. He became Jim McLean’s first United signing at the beginning of 1972 and played just occasionally over the rest of the season but then became a stalwart of the side for ten years. A member of the team who won the Clubs first major honour with the League Cup win in 1979, he followed that up with a second League Cup winner’s medal in 1980. He also gained runners-up medals from Scottish Cup finals in 1974 and 1981.
