United gave themselves a pre-season boost on Friday when they completed the signing of former AC Milan player Joachim Fernandez.
The 27-year-old Frenchman has had experience in his own country with Bordeaux and Toulouse as well as in Italian football with Udinese and Monza in addition to the Milan giants.
"Joachim has shown during his trial with us that he is a good footballer and I am happy to have someone of his experience at the club," said a delighted boss Paul Sturrock.
The midfielder will go straight into the squad to face Celtic for the league opener at Tannadice on Sunday, as does new winger Neil Heaney. Both played well in a closed-door game on Thursday night that also saw a foreign striker turn out. Paul wants a longer look at him before deciding whether or not to offer him a contract.
Looking ahead to Sunday, the manager is relishing the start of another season. "With a new manager and several signings who'll want to impress him and the fans, Celtic will be tough opposition, but we have worked hard in pre-season and are keen to get the real thing started."
