The big news at the end of Sunday's closing league game at Celtic was that, his coming testimonial against Everton apart, veteran Maurice Malpas's first team career is over.
The 37-year-old, until yesterday the last member of the 1983 championship winning team still playing, confirmed he will now be concentrating on his role as a coach, though as part of his duties he will still turn out for the under-21s.
Signed back in 1979, this season saw Maurice break Dave Narey's league appearance record of 612 games-his Parkhead bow was his 617th for United in the league, while overall he pulled on the jersey for 830 competitive games.
"Maurice has been a great servant to the club and down the years has set a superb example to the other players here. Of course, he will continue to be a valuable member of the coaching team," says manager Paul Sturrock.
The fans will get the chance to farewell to Malpas the player in that testimonial July 25.
