United were disappointed to lose the first game of their Irish trip 2-0 to Bohemians on Tuesday night, but manager Paul Sturrock was still happy with certain aspects of his team's first public performance of the pre-season.
Biggest plus was the return of Jim Paterson. Playing his first game since recovering from a leg fracture that ruined his season last term, Paterson showed up well.
"Playing down the left side, he gave us good balance and put in a few
dangerous balls," says Paul. "I was also happy with the performances of Jamie Buchan and Hasney Aljofree. They are still settling in, but showed they definitely have plenty to offer us."
On the down side the manager felt the game showed the areas of the side that needed strengthening, though that came as no surprise to him. "I saw what I expected to see. There are areas where we are short and that is why I am looking to bring players in as soon as I can."
Two of the four foreign trialists currently with the squad, took part and the other two should get a taste of action against Bray Wanderers tomorrow night.
Striker Steven Thompson hurt a thigh after coming on last night and could miss out on the second game.
