United travel North this weekend to fulfill their third fixture in the restructured Betfred Scottish League Cup. Inverness Caley Thistle are our opponents in a match that will go a long way to define the teams that will qualify out of the group stages.
By Graeme Webster
United sit top of the finely balanced group C, with five points from two games. However, both Caley and Dunfermline have played a game less, and both teams have collected maximum points from their opener. A win for United in Inverness would put the Tangerines in a commanding position in the mini-league with just a home fixture with Dunfermline to negotiate.
Despite a very impressive and encouraging 6-1 victory over Cowdenbeath in midweek, United will know they will face a much tougher challenge in Inverness. Saturday’s match against Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership opposition will give a better indication as to the progress McKinnon has made with the team in the short time he has been in charge.
Simon Murray was the hat-trick hero against Cowdenbeath, and the first to notch a tangerine treble since David Goodwillie achieved the feat against Partick Thistle in September 2013.
Six of McKinnon’s summer signings played on Tuesday and his new look side showed some great potential, attacking with pace and flair at every opportunity. The most recent signing of Nick van der Velden had to settle for a debut from the bench in midweek. However, with the games now coming thick and fast, the manager may opt to shuffle the side again in a bid to ensure everyone is in top condition for the league campaign starting on August 6th.
Inverness have also been through significant change during the summer with the arrival of their new manager Richie Foran. They have lost more players than they have been able to bring in, with neighbours Dundee snapping up first teamers Danny Williams and James Vincent. And a thorn in our side from last season, Miles Storey, has also moved on to Aberdeen. Kevin McNaughton and Billy King were the most notable close season additions to Foran’s squad.
There should be no lack of confidence in the Tannadice ranks following the rush of goals on Tuesday and with every point in this competition crucial, we should be in for a fantastic match at the Caledonian Stadium.
