United made three changes to the side that drew with Partick Thistle in mid-week, Sean Dillon, Harry Souttar and Billy Mckay making way for Mark Durnan and Coll Donaldson, whilst Justin Johnson was handed with his first start for the Club.
It was the perfect start for United, inside 12 minutes Mark Durnan heading home from a looping Scott Fraser.
Just before the half hour mark however, Killie equalised, a defensive mix-up seeing Kallum Higginbotham strike decisively into the net.
Only six minutes later, the home side added their second of the afternoon when a swift counter-attack saw Tope Obadeyi place his shot into the corner of the net.
Kilmarnock looked fairly comfortable thereafter, looking likely to take the three points, however, with 15 minutes to play, a quick-fire double from Simon Murray put United back into the lead.
To make things more comfortable, with five minutes left to play Harry Souttar leaped high and guided an accurate header into the back of the net.
