FUENTES STAYS AS FIVE DEPART

25th October 2000

Manager Alex Smith has announced that only one of the group of South and Central Americans who have been fixed up on short term contracts or trial recently, will be staying on at Tannadice. He is Argentinian striker Gustavo Fuentes, an impressive performer at first team level against both halves of the Old Firm recently.

Fuentes was signed from Honduran champions Motagua and his services have now been secured until the end of the season at least. Honduran Francisco Ramirez, who arrived with Fuentes from Motagua, will be returning home as will Carlos Marcora, Pablo Pozzuto, Marcelino Gallopo and the Venezuelan defender who played as a trialist in Monday's Under-21 clash with Celtic.

The Argentinian striker, as yet un-named, who also played a trial in that game will get another week or so to prove he is worth a contract and Alex stressed that while most of the recent crop from the other side of the Atlantic have returned home quickly, it is a market he will continue to look at. "We have seen some talented players, but they are not the type we need right now. However, there are a lot of good players in South and Central America and we will continue to look to there, or anywhere else, for quality performers at a price we can afford."
