DUNDEE UNITED SIGN MARK WILSON

20th August 2013

Dundee United today confirmed the signing of defender Mark Wilson on an initial short term deal until the end of January.

The 29-year-old joins the Club after his release from Bristol City.

Mark began his career at Dundee United and made his debut as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 victory over Dundee FC. He went on to play 138 times for the Club, scoring 11 goals and playing in the 2005 Scottish Cup Final. He left United in 2006 to join Celtic for a fee of around £500,000.

During his time at Celtic, Wilson played over 130 times and won SPL Championship medals and Scottish Cup winners medals during his time there. The former Scotland Under 21 captain was capped for Scotland at full international level in the Challenge Cup match versus Northern Ireland in 2011.

At the beginning of the 2012 league season, Mark left Celtic and signed for Bristol City. He started eight games for them before leaving at the end of the season.

He becomes Jackie McNamara's tenth signing of the new campaign.

Jackie McNamara said, "Mark brings experience and ability to the squad. The short term deal will give him an opportunity to show there are no fitness concerns.

"He will enhance our squad and his versatility is important. He is comfortable at right back and left back and also gives the option of playing in front of the back four. He is the type of player who will help us get control of the ball and settle us down when required and I am delighted he has signed."

Mark Wilson said, "Tannadice holds great memories for me as I had great times here as a young player. I am coming back as an older, more experienced footballer. I know I can be a useful asset for Dundee United and I cannot wait to get playing again.

"I hope this deal leads to a longer term deal as there is no doubt I play my best football when I am settled. I am joining a young squad with some experienced players but I can help add experience. Every successful team has that mix of youth and experience and I see real potential here."
